Backflow privacy policy

Effective: September 14, 2026

This policy applies to the Backflow 0.1.0 beta for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, available in TestFlight as Backflow by Upper Tail and provided by Upper Tail Software LLC.

Information stored by the app

Backflow stores its workspace on the device or Mac where you use it. The workspace contains the information you enter:

  • Customer names, contact names, phone numbers, and email addresses.
  • Site names, addresses, states, local water authorities, meter or account numbers, and access notes.
  • Assembly serial numbers, manufacturers, models, sizes, types, location notes, and service reminder dates.
  • Test drafts, including tester names, visit dates and times, recorded observations, additional notes, and the time each draft was updated.

Fictional example records you choose to add, or that remain from an earlier build, are also stored in the workspace. App preferences, including the default state and water authority for new sites and any retained planning note from an earlier build, are stored locally.

This version has no account or sign-in, app server, automatic cross-device sync, advertising, tracking, or third-party analytics service. Backflow does not automatically send your workspace to Upper Tail Software LLC or another service. It does not request access to your device contacts, photos, camera, microphone, or location. Contact details and addresses are entered by you.

Local backups and exports

Before replacing an existing saved workspace, Backflow retains the preceding saved file as a local backup. Later saves replace that backup; it is not a complete history of your records. Each app installation has its own workspace and local backup.

When you choose Export workspace backup, Backflow creates a JSON file containing the current workspace records. You choose its destination using the system file picker. If you choose a cloud storage location or share the exported file afterward, the chosen provider or recipient can receive that copy, including the contact details, addresses, and notes it contains. Upper Tail Software LLC does not receive exported files automatically.

This version does not include import or in-app backup restore. Exported copies are managed separately from the app's local workspace.

Storage and deletion

Saved information remains in the app's local storage until that storage is removed. This beta does not include an in-app delete or reset control. Device and Mac storage and backup tools control local app data and any copies included in system backups. You manage exported files at the destinations you choose. Removing an application does not necessarily remove its exports, every backup, or, on a Mac, all of its saved data.

We cannot remotely access, recover, or delete your local workspace, local backup, or exported copies.

TestFlight and feedback

When you use Backflow through TestFlight, Apple collects beta-testing information, including crash logs and usage information, and shares it with the developer. This can include invitation and device details and, depending on your invitation, your name and email address. If you submit feedback, Apple and the developer also receive the information you provide, which may include comments and screenshots. We use this beta-testing information to investigate problems and improve Backflow.

TestFlight is separate from Backflow's local workspace storage. Include only information you intend to share in feedback or screenshots. Apple's handling of this information is described in TestFlight & Privacy and Apple's Privacy Policy.
